Type This

by Dave Michels

Yesterday, it was reported that the last typewriter manufacturer in the world (located in India) closed its doors.

No more typewriters

I still have my IBM Selectric (and a box of ribbons). It goes with my phone booth (with rotary payphone) and my newspaper vending machine.

But it turns out the news was wrong (imagine that). Swintec, based in.Moonachie, N.J. still makes them, or least has them made in China. According to Ed Michael, GM of Swintec, big offices need a typewriter or two or three to do some special jobs — special forms, multipart forms. Some places need to have typewriters to do original forms such as birth certificates, death certificates, things like that.

I am greatly relieved. If the typewriter goes, what will I fax?
