TalkingPointz Research: MDEP (the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform)

1. Overview

  1. Android is the world’s most popular operating system. Google publishes Android in two forms: the version that runs on popular smartphones, and an open-source version called the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
  2. AOSP is open and freely available for anyone to use and modify; however, it does not include Google Apps or access to the Google Play Store. Vendors often use AOSP to create their own version of Android for various devices, from televisions to auto infotainment systems. 
  3. The flexibility of AOSP created challenges. These splintered versions of Android have inconsistent policies and practices regarding security and updates.
  4. Microsoft’s Device Ecosystem Platform (MDEP) is essentially Microsoft’s version of AOSP. MDEP introduces a centralized, Microsoft-controlled implementation of Android. 
  5. MDEP was initially introduced as a solution for Microsoft Teams Rooms (MTR); however, it is not part of the Teams group within Microsoft. MDEP lives in Microsoft’s Windows and Devices organization. 
  6. In July 2025, MDEP released version 25.1, signaling continued development and refinement of the platform. 
  7. While this report mentions and speculates about some of the other existing and possible uses for MDEP, our primary focus is on MDEP’s impact on collaboration, primarily with Microsoft Teams. We also anticipate MDEP’s eventual ubiquity and the related benefits and risks.
  8. We acknowledge the recent announcement that MDEP will expand into digital signage, but this research note remains centered on Teams use cases.
  9. Security is the most frequent reason Microsoft cites for the need for MDEP in Microsoft Teams Rooms. As far as MTR is concerned, MDEP will also reduce fragmentation, improve patch compliance, enable closer feature parity between Windows and Android-based Teams Rooms, and simplify IT management. 
  10. This TalkingPointz Research Note explores the technical architecture of MDEP, the strategic drivers behind its development, the risks and opportunities it presents for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and enterprises, and what it signals about Microsoft’s future in UC&C infrastructure, again, focusing mostly on the Teams-based collaboration solutions.

    1. Microsoft’s initial approach for Teams Rooms was to use Windows-based hardware. OCS, Lync, Skype for Business, and then Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows (MTRoW) were positioned as the respective flagship platforms, offering the richest feature set, deepest integration with other Microsoft tools, and the most predictable management experience. Partners and customers alike were encouraged to standardize on Windows-based systems to take full advantage of Microsoft’s rapidly evolving meeting innovations. 
    2. However, the growing popularity of simpler, more affordable Android-based devices was hard to ignore.
