David Danto attended NAB 2026, his 42nd year attending the NAB Conference. Here is a summary of his findings and experiences.
I - Executive Summary
- NAB 2026 showed that the media industry is no longer cleanly divided between broadcasters, streaming platforms, enterprise media teams, sports organizations, content creators, and AV professionals, because the same show floor now serves all of them at once.
- The event appears to have grown from a registration standpoint, with more than 58,000 registered attendees reported, up from 55,000 the prior year, which helps support the argument that NAB remains relevant even as many trade shows face pressure.
- The most important themes at the show were the continued shift from SDI toward IP-based infrastructure, the rise of software-defined and cloud-connected workflows, the growing weight of creators and creator tools, the expanding role of audio, and a more practical use of AI tied to workflow improvement rather than empty hype.
- What once made NAB feel disjointed now feels like one of its greatest advantages, because the unusual variety of exhibitors may be a more honest picture of the modern production market than a more neatly segmented trade show would provide.
- NAB 2026 therefore came across less as a simple product-launch event and more as a snapshot of an industry being reorganized around interoperability, flexibility, multi-format output, and a much broader definition of who now gets to produce media.
II - Introduction
- This outline summarizes the most important themes, examples, and observations that emerged from NAB 2026 rather than attempting to catalog every booth, launch, or product announcement shown in Las Vegas.
- The analysis is based on a combination of multiple sources, including specific on-site observation.
- The goal is to identify the larger story of the show first and then use selected examples to illustrate that story, rather than to create a comprehensive list of winners or a directory of vendors.
- The examples included later are not endorsements, nor are they the only relevant products shown at NAB, but they are useful illustrations of the broader shifts described in the analysis.
