I didn’t like the Polycom divestiture of SpectraLink last year; it seemed like retreating from the enterprise mobility space even if their iPad RealPresent mobile solution is pretty snazzy. But if Polycom’s push towards software is real , it’s a good long-term position to take.
But it was odd that Polycom was not easy to partner with even as its position was about being the third-party and standalone video partner for UC. The positioning was bizarre to watch at times; we all knew that IBM and Microsoft should all be strong Polycom partners, but somehow Polycom never seemed fully embedded. And a good Polycom-Avaya relationship would have kept the Radvision acquisition from happening. Avaya-Radvision is going to take away a heck of a lot more market share than Radvision could have on its own.
