Center-of-Table Cameras: Back to the Future of Meeting Equity

by David Danto

COT cameras are the latest not-so-new thing. It stands for “center of table,” not the thing that hurts your back on a camping trip. Center-of-table (COT) cameras move the primary room video capture point to where the conversation actually happens: the table. They complement front-of-room systems by showing faces head-on, reducing “back-of-head” profiles, and improving conversational flow for remote participants.

This paper explores the evolution of center-of-table imaging in collaboration – how it began as an experimental concept, matured through several generations of technology, and ultimately reshaped expectations for hybrid meeting design. It examines both the advantages and limitations of bringing the camera to the center of the conversation, weighing the promise of improved engagement and natural interaction against the practical challenges of cost, installation, and system complexity.
