UCaaS + Google Apps

Perhaps the biggest mystery in the world is why Google doesn’t add enterprise-class voice solutions to its UC portfolio. I don’t have that answer, but solutions are appearing from partners.

Last week Vonage acquired gUnify which offers a very strong set of APIs to Google Apps (and Zendesk, Salesforce’s Sales Cloud, Clio, and other CRM solutions) to telephony providers. gUnify was getting some traction with BroadSoft-based providers when Vonage acquired it. With this functionality in its arsenal, Vonage can better address the needs of its customers by enabling them to extend their unified communications to core business applications.

Today, a UCaaS provider targeting Google Apps users, announced it raised $35 million in a strategic Series C round. This represents a significant increase in investments from its prior fund raising efforts of $18 million. The investment will allow international expansion and new product improvements (video?). My favorite thing about Switch is the Android client which uses the native dialer instead of a separate app.

I expect more action in Google Apps and UC soon.
